| Nostalgic patrons find treasures at Metro auction
PORTSMOUTH -- The lights that once illuminated artwork hanging inside The Metro were still lit Saturday afternoon, but shined only on a blank wall. All the antique posters -- along with nearly 200 other items -- had been auctioned off and removed from the restaurant, drawing an end to The Metro's 27 years in existence. About 100 people attended the auction, and while many were looking for a good deal on the impressive antiques collection, just as many attended to bring home a piece of the restaurant that had served as a meeting place for so many over the years. "It's sad to see a piece of history go," said Carolyn Carroll, who called herself a regular at the High Street establishment. She purchased two European posters from the late 19th and early 20th century to give to her kids, who, as children, would also come to the restaurant and play on the grand piano.
MAGAZINE IDEAS: Ramp up the romance
If you've chosen a special something for a special someone for that special day in February, be sure to wrap it in a special package. The February issue of Country Home has some ideas: -Head for the thrift store to find a 45 record that suits your sentiments, anything from "I Want to Hold Your Hand" by the Beatles to "Go All the Way" by the Raspberries. Tape a photograph on the back of the record so it shows through the spindle hole (see photo). Tie this musical picture frame to the top of your gift. -Tie an antique key on the gift with velvet ribbon (see photo). It not only looks neat but also carries a message — something about unlocking your heart. -Repackage store-bought or homemade truffles and other candy in old film canisters. Glue interesting antique drawer knobs to the top for an added flourish (see photo).

A classic love story for Valentine's Day
It's a classic love story. The cheerleader adviser and the head football coach meet and fall for each other in the high school halls. That story played out at Lebanon High School, where Warriors cheerleading coach Bethanie (Landis) and football coach Shawn Lamb met seven years ago. Both teachers in the social studies department, Shawn and Bethanie were friends for six years before their first date, the night of Lebanon High School's 2005 graduation. .
