History of Black residents of Martha's Vineyard gets personal
Elaine Cawley Weintraub knew her students at Martha's Vineyard Regional High School weren't getting the whole story when it came to the rich history of the island. She recalls one day when a black student asked about the history of other black residents who had lived on the island. Another teacher told him they were only visitors. "Then what was he doing here?" Weintraub said, referring to the student who lived year-round on the island. "That was a long vacation." Weintraub decided it was time for the history of the island's black residents, which dates to the 17th century, to be documented and shared. What began in 1989 as a history project for her students has evolved -- with the help of many Vineyard residents -- into a tour that transforms the island itself into a museum.

Residents' reactions to merger mixed
CONCORD - News traveled quickly Thursday about the merger of NorthEast Medical Center in Concord and Carolinas HealthCare System in Charlotte. Residents in downtown Concord were talking about the merger. Lou Andersen of Concord said his wife works at NorthEast. He said he was worried about her job. "I said this morning that if someone at (Carolinas Medical Center) University works the same job, would they be able to get your job?" Andersen said. "I just don't know. I wonder if they are going to start cutting back." Numerous phone calls left with NorthEast physicians and employees were not returned Thursday. Sandra Nunn, owner of The Antique Market of Concord, retired six years ago from NorthEast's human resources department. She said she trusts the hospital administration to do what is right.
